Joy Greenstein

Additional Information

Joy moved to Brookfield in 2007 with her husband Matthew because of the great
reputation of the Brookfield Schools. It was the hometown feel that made it an easy
decision to start and raise a family in Brookfield. Joy and Matthew have two
children, Vanessa and Mason. From that point forward, Joy has been deeply rooted
in the Brookfield Community. For the past 10 years, Joy has volunteered in the
following capacities: St. Joseph’s Church Catechist and Children’s Choir, Coach for
the Brookfield Soccer Club, Coach for the Brookfield Basketball Association, and Vice
President, Girls Scheduler, and Coach for the Brookfield Lacrosse Club. Joy has taken
on many tasks and projects that have had huge positive impacts on many of our
Brookfield Students. For example, spearheading and creating an outdoor classroom
at the beloved Huckleberry Hill Elementary through the garden, Huck’s Paw Patch,
the painting of positive themed sayings and collages throughout the walls of HHES,
and leading the charge and spearheading the 8 th grade moving-up ceremony and
field trips for two years. With one recent graduate from BHS and one child now a
junior at BHS, Joy continues to build community through her work at BHS in the
following capacities: Being the team mom and organizing fundraisers and banquets
for the high school girls volleyball and lacrosse teams, a member of the PTO
executive board, the all night graduation party, and the 1 st annual, BHS back to
school event for all students and families.

Joy Greenstein is an Elementary Reading Specialist and this is her 25th year of
teaching. Joy graduated Cum Laude and earned her M.S. degree in Literacy from
Mount St. Mary College and her B.A. degree in Elementary and Early Childhood
Education, and Child Development from SUNY Oneonta. She has been a true leader
in the field of education through her current role as the Districts English Language
Arts Curriculum Coordinator. Through this role she writes curriculum and aligns it
to Common Core State Standards and benchmark assessments, she provides
professional development and support to staff, and models best practices in the
classroom. Joy is the District Union Vice President, the Head Building Representative
in her school, and is on the Union Negotiations Team. She also runs ELA tutorials
before school, and is the advisor and creator of an after school program for higher-
level readers, and she runs a homework/tutoring club afterschool for students.

Joy has been serving on the Board of Education since 2017. She was the chair of the
facilities subcommittee and was instrumental in the Candlewood Lake Elementary
School project, the Boys High School Locker Room Project, getting rid of the
portables at Whisconier Middle School, and improving our school facilities district
wide. Joy is currently a member of the policy subcommittee and has been working
tirelessly to update hundreds of policies and improve the current district
handbooks. Joy is also currently the chair of the CAPE subcommittee and works
closely with building administrators, and the Assistant Superintendent of
Instruction to implement new initiatives and programs, improve current programs
of studies, identify instructional needs, review textbooks and materials, curriculum
alignment, approve teacher training workshops to maintain and improve professional competence, and most important, to ensure objectivity in the curriculum.

Joy continues to advocate for a focus on core subjects and parental rights and transparency. Joy has championed parents’ rights to access curriculum, books, and other school materials, and to have a say in their child’s education. As a current Board of Education Member, Joy has respect for diverse points of view and approaches each decision with an open mind. She understands that anyone who comes before the board has the right to be heard, not just to speak and that it’s her job to build public understanding, support and participation free of political bias. Joy prioritizes the need to be fiscally responsible, while valuing the need to be
competitive by hiring and retaining high quality teachers and staff.
